Covenant House Michigan 25th Anniversary

In the fall of 1997, Covenant House Michigan opened its doors to Detroit's young people facing homelessness with the establishment of the Eastside Community Service Center. In less than three years, CHM expanded to include a Street Outreach program (1997), a second Community Service Center  and a Job Development Center (1998), and a Crisis Center (April 2000). In the fourth year of operation, the Rights of Passage transitional living program (October 2000) opened. Our Detroit campus opened the House of Hope, co-occurring disorders day program in 2017 and in the fall of 2018, CHM opened our second emergency shelter in Grand Rapids, serving 28 youth through the generosity of the west Michigan community.

Over our 25 years, we have served over 80,000 young people across our core programs and services. Our alumni have become independent, confident successful adults, creating their own amazing lives. Our staff, some of whom have been with us the entire 25-year journey, have supported, uplifted and provided unconditional love and absolute respect to every young person who enters our campuses, many of whom have no other place to go. We have laughed and cried with them, becoming friends and mentors in their lives.

Every person deserves a safe place to sleep and hope for a brighter tomorrow. For young people, homelessness interrupts progress toward adulthood and a future of independence and self-sufficiency.

Covenant House's doors are always open to all young people who need housing and help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. Our trauma-informed services help bridge the gap between potential and progress, and we also advocate for systemic change through public policy, while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness. The Covenant House mission is centered and built on community, where youth, staff, volunteers, and partners love one another unconditionally, respect each other absolutely, and dedicate ourselves to a covenant of compassion and hope.

WHY ARE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE HOMELESS?

Every person deserves a safe place to sleep and hope for a brighter tomorrow. For young people, homelessness interrupts progress toward adulthood and a future of independence and self-sufficiency.

Covenant House's doors are always open to all young people who need housing and help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. Our trauma-informed services help bridge the gap between potential and progress, and we also advocate for systemic change through public policy, while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness.

Foster Care

Nearly one thousand young people over 18 age out of the Michigan foster care system each year, yet many still need support and services. Several studies show that without a lifelong connection to a caring adult, these older youth are often left vulnerable to a host of adverse situations. Compared to other young people their age, those who age out of foster care are more likely to not have completed high school or received a GED, they often suffer from mental health problems, many are unemployed live in poverty, and nearly 40% become homeless.

Living Wages

A living wage is defined as "a wage sufficient to provide the necessities essential to an acceptable standard of living, and provides it with some ability to deal with emergencies, without resorting to welfare or other public assistance." Unfortunately, in most states the "Minimum" wage is far lower than a living wage. This disparity is one of the leading causes of being unsheltered among young adults in America today. Despite having a job, many do not make enough money to pay the bills. And without savings or family support, they often end up on the streets.

Mental Health

Youth and young adults who experience homelessness have significantly higher rates of emotional, behavioral, and immediate long-term health problems (SAMHSA – Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Approximately 57% of youth experiencing homelessness struggle with mental health issues, from PTSD to major depression to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Moreover, the trauma many homeless youth experience overwhelms their resources for coping, making them more susceptible to substance abuse issues

Trauma - Abuse & Neglect

Trauma — physical, sexual and emotional — is both a cause and a consequence of youth being unsheltered. Numerous studies conducted during the past decade identify domestic violence as a primary cause of being homeless in the United States, particularly for women and children, who now comprise approximately 40% of the unsheltered population.

Physical abuse during childhood is a powerful risk factor for adult homelessness, and violence experienced by youth often continues after they become unsheltered. Individuals flee abuse at home only to rediscover it on the streets or in shelters.

& INSTABILITY​

Family Dynamics and Instability

A breakdown of family is a contributing factor of youth experiencing homelessness. This can happen at any time. Sometimes it is due to the death of a parent or caregiver. If there is no extended family or support system, younger children are placed in the foster care system and older youth are left to fend for themselves. An eviction or foreclosure can force an entire family to become unsheltered and separate. Youth are often left without a permanent home causing them to move from one friend or family's home to another until they have overstayed their welcome and look for some other type of shelter.

We provide direct care for survivors of trafficking and work to stop this exploitation as part of the strongest anti-trafficking coalition in the United States.

HOW DO WE HELP?

Our goal at Covenant House Michigan is to provide a better life for the youth who come through our doors. We not only offer food and shelter, we offer a package for independence and overall success. Whether they are brought here by our Outreach Team or walk through our doors, every child is embraced with open arms.​ Helping young people embrace the great promise of their lives, Covenant House Michigan offers a combination of support strategies, including- educational programs, job training and placement, medical services, mental health and substance abuse counseling.

OUTREACH​

Our Outreach team provides services to homeless youth living on the streets or in abandoned houses and cars.​

Our 45-bed shelter is a warm and welcoming space for youth aged 18 to 24 taking the first step toward positive life changes.​

RIGHTS
OF PASSAGE​

Residents in our two-year transitional living program develop a life plan for successful independent living.​

ADVANCING
EDUCATION​

Covenant House Michigan collaborated to open four charter schools to better serve the needs of homeless and at-risk youth.​

EMPLOYMENT
CENTER​

Through training and mentoring our staff prepare kids for the world of work and independence by teaching basic life skills that are often foreign concepts to many homeless youth.​
